India's COVID-19 case surge begins to slow down, weekly death toll doubles

The COVID-19 death toll in India increased around two-fold during the week ending Sunday, even as the surge in cases started showing signs of slowing.

The country registered 2,680 deaths from COVID-19 during the week from January 17-23, with a 92% increase over last weeks toll of 1,396. The previous week had also witnessed a similar rise in deaths. However, in absolute numbers, fatalities continue to remain low in the third wave, till now, as compared to the previous two waves.

The increase in cases, seen in the previous three weeks, slowed down considerably. The week-on-week growth in cases slowed to 30%, declining from 112% last week and more than 500% in the week prior to that.

The country registered around 21.7 lakh new cases in the week, which is the fourth highest weekly tally since the start of the pandemic… (ET Healthworld – TNN, January 24, 2022)
